Sport
We believe that until the age of 8 or 9 a child's overriding sporting goal must be to develop physical mastery. Hence, sport for all children at this age must promote the development of these physical skills. In other words, competition is really unnecessary. All children at this age need to interact with their peers and cope with authority which does not come from the family. At this age, children do not really have the social capacity to understand the true meaning of competition. The emphasis must be on learning the concepts of the game, the importance of the different team positions and on how to co-operate with team members. This can be achieved without any emphasis on winning.
Physical education, with trained teachers, is an important part of the curriculum and this is complemented with extra-curricular activities which are encouraged. We feel that by encouraging active participation in sport in the school situation, self-expression and satisfaction, which lead to mental and physical health, will be developed.
